Flytipping costs tax-payers hundreds of millions of pounds each year, and can have some bearing on house prices and local businesses. It damages the natural environment, causes harm to wildlife, and effects our quality of life.

Fly-tipping is the unlawful dumping of rubbish such as household and garden waste, electrical items, tyres and building waste in places such as by the side of the road, lay-bys, playing fields, or private land. It ends upcosting the tax-payer millions of pounds each year and can have a negative effect on property prices and local businesses.

What happens if you are caught fly-tipping

Dumping illegally is a serious criminal offence that carries a fine of up to 50,000 pounds(unlimited if the case goes to the Crown Court). You could also face a prison sentence of up to five years for fly-tipping. Local councils treat fly-tipping very seriously and will usually prosecute anyone caught fly-tipping waste.

You could also face the same penalties if:

* you allow someone to fly-tip on your land

* a vehicle that is registered to you is used to fly-tip

You could face penalties up to 5,000 pounds if:

* you don't check that the company or person you give waste to has a licence to carry waste
* you don't check that the company or person you give waste to is not taking it to an unlicensed site

You can check whether a company is licensed to carry waste by searching the public register on the Environment Agency website.

The government says tougher action has led to an 18.7% fall in the illegal dumping of rubbish in the last year. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has discovered that the number of incidents of illegally dumped waste in England fell by almost one-fifth (18.7%) to 947,000, following a 9% reduction the previous year.

In total, there were 2,460 prosecution actions carried out in 2009-10, of which 97% achieved a successful outcome such as a fine.
